Blanka Vlašić is the new European Champion in high jump ! This great athlete from Split won her fist medal on a European Championship and hit gold. In order to win the Blanka had to clear 203 cm, which none of her competitors managed to do. Emma Green from Sweden won silver with 201 cm and the best personal jump, while bronze went to the German Arianne Friedrich, who also cleared 201 cm, but with one more attempt than the Swedish athlete.
The exciting high jump competition in the Montjuic stadium was practically decided at 201 cm. Until that height, without any failed jump, Arianne Friedrich was first, Blanka failed once at 195cm and 197 cm, but cleared 201 cm at the first attempt. This was obviously too much for the German, so Emma Green used her chance and managed to clear 201 cm, after her best ever jump of 198 cm. The final confirmation of her victory came on 203 cm. Blanka manages this height in her second attempt, while both Friedrich and Greene fail in all three attempts.
Blanka tried to jump 205, but after the first attempt she decided not to jump any further and started the deserved celebration in front of the audience in Barcelona.
This is the second gold medal of Croatian athletes on this European Championship, Sandra Perković is the best discus thrower in Europe.
